How to identify the top 5 diseases in dogs

Our Dogs are a part of our family, and they require equal attention and care as any other member of the family. As their parents, we are responsible for their wellbeing and safety.

Since they cannot express themselves with words when they are ill, we have put together this article to help guide you in identifying their illness. Here is a list of the 5 most recurrent dog diseases and how to identify them:

Cystitis is one of the most common diseases in dogs, it is difficult to diagnose in the early stages since the symptoms are not very apparent. A sign to pay close attention to is your dog’s urine. Your pet will be urinating less and most often it will contain blood.

While many countries have been able to completely eradicate Rage, others are still suffering from it. Rage is very dangerous as it is transmissible to humans through dog bites. Fortunately, it is easy to identify and also treat it. Symptoms manifest in the form of Depression, Violent and uncontrolled aggression, Growling, Biting, and Curling of lips. So if you notice any of these signs, take your dog to the vet ASAP!

Piroplasmosis a disease introduced by ticks is highly dangerous and in most cases fatal, but don’t worry it is treatable by a visit to your veterinarian. Luckily, symptoms of this disease are significant and easy to notice. So you should definitely take your dog to a health professional in case you notice that they have ticks, start vomiting, have yellow feces, and/or darker urine accompanied by insomnia and apathy.

If your dog has had a cut or an open wound lately, you should be mindful of Tetanus symptoms, as the bacteria responsible for it, is introduced through contact of wounds with soil that contains this type of bacteria. Tetanus causes stiffening of the neck, jaw, and hind legs, which progresses into stiffening of the whole body and dehydration. Your dog will need an antitoxin to kill the toxins in their bloodstream, the sooner they get it the better it works!

Another common disease transmitted by ticks is Lyme disease. 90% of dogs who have it do not show any symptoms. For those who show symptoms, they manifest in the form of recurrent lameness due to inflammation of the joints, fever, general feeling of discomfort, and difficulty breathing. But the best way to identify Lyme disease is to consult with your veterinarian on your next visit.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, don’t panic! Today’s medical care has improved greatly, and health professionals are well-equipped to deal with any of these diseases. A regular physical examination at the veterinarian could help identify problems at their early stages when they are easily treatable.
